The Manchester derby is one of the most highly awaited fixtures in the Premier League. The balance in power has shifted in the favour of the Sky Blues. But not too long ago, the Red Devils were by far the best in the country.

Since the fixture has such a considerable history attached to it, let’s take a look at the top goalscorers in the history of the Manchester derby.

Top 5 goalscorers of all-time in the Manchester derby

5. Sir Bobby Charlton (Manchester United) – 9 Goals

The World Cup and Ballon d’Or winner was one of the main reasons behind Manchester United’s domination. He scored nine goals in the derby, and went on to become United’s second-highest goalscorer of all-time.

4. Sergio Agüero (Manchester City) – 9 Goals

Most modern fans would believe that Sergio Aguero has the most goals for City in the Manchester derby at least. However, the City legend misses out by one goal. Regardless, Aguero is one of the greatest strikers the Premier League has seen, with an iconic legacy for the Sky Blues especially with that last-minute strike that won them the league in 11/12.

3. Francis Lee (Manchester City) – 10 Goals

Like Aguero, Francis Lee is another revered striker in Manchester City’s history. The sturdy and fast striker scored 10 times in the derby, and always showed up in the big game.

2. Joe Hayes (Manchester City) – 10 Goals

Joe Hayes and Francis Lee are tied at 10 goals each in the Manchester derby. He was a top performer for the club during the 1950s and early 1960s, before suffering a major knee injury that hindered his career.

1. Wayne Rooney (Manchester United) – 11  Goals

Manchester United’s top goalscorer of all-time also leads the list in the Manchester derby. The English forward was able to score 11 goals against United’s local rivals, during their days of dominating English football.
