Contrary to reports, Xiaomi has not confirmed that the Redmi K60 series will receive a Dynamic Island-style notification system. While Xiaomi claims to have considered the matter, it will not be moving ahead with copying Apple’s novel use of the space occupied by the sizeable pill punch-hole on the iPhone 14 Pro series.
With the introduction of Dynamic Island on the iPhone 14 Pro series, it was almost inevitable that manufacturers in the Android realm would follow through on their vision for the feature. Xiaomi’s MIUI developers are already working on similar implementations and we might see an official implementation with the upcoming Redmi K60.
Dynamic Island-like feature in Redmi K60
Apple introduced its iPhone 14 Pro models with a new Dynamic Island design. The Pro models have a black pill-shaped cut-out design on the front and Apple has cleverly blended it with UI elements to make better use of the upper space. The black bar changes size and shape when the iPhone receives important alerts, notifications, and live scores, among other things.
It is currently unknown whether Smart Island will arrive on the Redmi K60 or not, but we do expect something similar to arrive on Android phones in the coming months. It is worth noting that some MIUI developer are already testing the Dynamic Island feature for music controls and notifications.
Xiaomi China President Lu Weibing asked users if they “really need a smart island” on Weibo. Several users have responded that they would like to see Xiaomi’s position on the dynamic island, while others oppose such an implementation. Meanwhile, MIUI developers have already started working on such a new notification system that will allow for music controls and other notifications.
So far, MIUI 14 has only been spotted in a Xiaomi 13 Pro leaked hands-on image. Potentially, Xiaomi will showcase the OS update alongside the Xiaomi 13 series, with the upcoming Xiaomi 12T and Xiaomi 12T Pro relying on MIUI 13 instead.
