According to a Friday industry study report, Facebook’s monthly active users (MAU) have decreased by more than 25% in South Korea over the past two years.

According to Mobile Index, the data analysis division of regional data tracker IGAworks, the South Korean MAU total for Facebook (owned by Meta) was 11.09 million as of last month, down from 14.87 million in May 2020 when the business began accumulating relevant data.

The results were calculated using information from Google’s and Apple’s mobile app stores. According to Yonhap news agency, the July number also reflects a 17% year-over-year fall from 13.34 million. The persistent reduction in young Facebook users in South Korea is to blame for the decreasing trend.

The Korea Information Society Development Institute reports that in 2021, the percentage of people aged 25 to 38 who used Facebook was recorded at 27%, a dramatic decrease from 48.6% in 2017.

“Many teens and 20-something users have moved to Instagram, and complaints over online ads on Facebook also appear to have grown,” an industry source said.

A disturbing trend for Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook was revealed last week by a new Pew Research Center survey of American teenagers (aged 13 to 17). The percentage of teenagers who use the social media site has fallen from 71% in 2014–15 to 32% as of right now.

In addition to Instagram, Facebook, and Snapchat, the Chinese short-form video network TikTok has rapidly gained popularity and is now one of the top social media sites for teenagers. Approximately 67% of teenagers claim to have used TikTok at some point, with 16% of all teenagers claiming to use it fairly daily.
