CWG 2022: India bagged its first gold in men's heavyweight para lifting Credits- India Today

There’s another gold medal in CWG for India as Sudhir got bagged the medal in the men’s heavyweight para powerlifting event this year. Sudhir who had earlier won a bronze in the Asian Para Games, lifted 208kg in his first attempt before the weight was increased to 212kg.

This was his effort to gather 134.5 points and break the previous record. he had a bronze in men’s up to 88kg with the best lift of 214kg at the World Para Powerlifting Asia–Oceania Open Championship in South Korea in June.

He started powerlifting in 2013 in Sonipat and entered the Hangzhou 2022 Asian PAra Olympics. However, the event is postponed to next year.

The President of India, Draupadi Murmu on Friday congratulated Sudhir on Twitter for creating history and bagging gold in para powerlifting at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. According to him, high spirits before the performance helped him bring gold to India.

He was born in a farmer’s family in Sonipat, Haryana,Spo and contracted polio due to a high fever at the age of four but that didn’t stop him from working on his dreams. He was interested in Sports since childhood which also let him try him weight lifting. His career began in 2013 and he got his first gold medal in the nationals, in 2016. He made his international debut in 2018 at the Asian Para Games.

He works as a Senior Coach of Weightlifting at the Government of Haryana. Earlier, Manpreet Kaur and Sakina Khatun couldn’t secure a podium finish in the women’s lightweight division. Manpreet had started with a successful lift of 87kg and 88kg in the first and second attempts respectively. He secures 89.6 points in total.
