AMD flagship EPYC 9000 CPU Smashing Intel’s Xeon processor is revealed to be AMD EPYC 9664

Yuuki AnS has reported the flagship EPYC 9000 SKU, the EPYC 9664. A few weeks ago, there were reports of the first and complete specifications of AMD’s EPYC 9000 “Genoa” CPU family based on the Zen 4 core architecture.

To maintain SP3 compatibility up till EPYC Milan, AMD has already said that EPYC Genoa would be compatible with the new SP5 platform, which introduces a new socket. The EPYC 9000 “Genoa” CPUs would also support new memory and have additional features such as 128 PCIe Gen 5 lanes per CPU, 700W TDP limitations for the LGA 6096 “SP5” socket, and 12-channel DDR5-5200 memory support.

The AMD EPYC 9664 will be the name of the flagship component, according to the leaker, and it will be a member of the Genoa EPYC 9000 series family.

The CPU will have the most cores in the Genoa family, with a total of 96 cores and 192 threads. AMD’s Genoa processor will include a maximum of 12 CCDs to reach 96 cores. The Zen 4 architecture will be used by each CCD’s 8 cores. Compared to Milan-X 64 core and 128 thread parts, this is a 50 per cent increase in cores and thread count.

The AMD EPYC 9664 “Genoa” CPU will have a total of 1 MB L2 cache per core and 32 MB of L3 cache per CCD, which will be shared between all Zen 4 cores inside the CCD. This results in a gigantic 480 MB cache pool being made available on the top SKU, which is made up of 384 MB of L3 cache and 96 MB of L2 cache. For instance, the flagship EPYC Milan-X CPU, the EPYC 7773X, has 288 MB of combined cache and 256 MB of L3 (32 MB per CCD) and 32 MB of L2 (512 KB per core). That represents a 67 per cent increase in the cache alone.

Only ES specifications are specified when it comes to clock rates, and they show a base clock set at roughly 2.25 GHz and a peak clock of up to 3.8 GHz. With 96 total cores, the all-core boost frequency ought to be in the 2 GHz area. The EPYC 7773X has a base speed of 2.2 GHz and a boost frequency of up to 3.5 GHz as a point of comparison. The Genoa processor will therefore deliver faster clock speeds despite having more cores. Do bear in mind that this is not the maximum power allowed when considering the TDP for the chip, which is set to 400W.

The EPYC 9000 “Genoa” CPU range from AMD will significantly improve performance for servers. A 192 core and 384 thread dual-socket setup will undoubtedly break some world records since we have already seen a partial 128 core / 256 thread combination defeat all current-gen server processors. It is anticipated that the AMD EPYC 9000 Genoa CPU range would go on sale in the second half of this year.
