Smartphone chip giant Qualcomm announced its new fast-charging standard recently for mid-range devices specifically. This is an upgrade to its old Quick Charge 3 standard which according to the company, will bring faster charging speeds and better power efficiency to devices at a lower price-point.

Qualcomm says that the new technology will be able to charge your smartphone from 0-50% in 15 minutes, which is around 35% faster than previous generations. The tech will also have better thermal management, this will keep temperature 9 degrees Celsius cooler than the older fast-charging standards, even the Quick Charge 3.0.

Qualcomm Quick Charge 3+ announced for mid-range smartphones

Quick Charge 3+ will work with both the standard USB type A as well as type C cables and any accessories that support scalable voltage with 20mV from Quick Charge 4. It is also reverse compatible with previous-generation Quick Charge devices, also newer devices will work with Quick Charge 3+ accessories.

The technology is also supported by two new PMICs, the SMB1395 and SMB1396. Both of these boards allow OEMs to implement Quick Charge 3+ using the same software implementation and address different system requirement in terms of PCB design, charger IC location, etc. without the need to implement an external Over Voltage Protection (OVP) chip.

Qualcomm’s new Quick Charge 3+ tech will be available first on the newer Snapdragon 765 & Snapdragon 765G SoCs. Whereas Xiaomi’s Mi 10 Lite Zoom, which is powered by the Snapdragon 765G, is the world’s first smartphone with both Quick Charge 4+ and Quick Charge 3+ charging tech.
