Spotify officially suspends its operations in Russia

Spotify Technology SA has announced the suspension of its service in Russia, citing a refusal to comply with new rules requiring the audio streaming to be censored in the country. The Swedish corporation dissolved its Russian branch earlier this month and placed restrictions on consumers’ ability to find shows produced by Russian official media. Following the suspension of their licences by the European Union, it also deleted content from Russia’s state-owned RT and Sputnik in the EU and other markets. Spotify stated at the time that it was critical to maintaining its service operational in Russia so that information could flow freely.

Spotify shifted its position on Friday in response to a newly implemented law that, according to the corporation, restricts access to information, suppresses free expression, and criminalises some forms of news. The new laws, according to the firm, put the safety of its personnel and maybe its listeners in jeopardy.

Since invading Ukraine, Russia has implemented legislation threatening retaliation against anyone who publishes what authorities perceive to be incorrect information concerning a “special military operation.”

According to a source familiar with the situation, the corporation is now searching for ways to encourage listeners to use VPN services to access Spotify and other independent news and information providers.

Spotify officially suspends its operations in Russia

Live Nation Entertainment Inc., the world’s largest concert organiser and ticketing agency via Ticketmaster, also announced earlier this month that it would no longer put on performances or conduct business in Russia.

Universal Music Group NV, Sony Group Corp.’s Sony Music Group, and Warner Music Group Corp., the world’s three largest record labels, have also suspended operations and closed offices in Russia, adding to the cultural sanctions imposed by global entertainment companies to isolate Russia economically and culturally as a result of its military actions.

Many entertainment firms have stated that they are attempting to strike a balance between their desire to promote dissident voices from within the region and the sanctions imposed on Russia.
