FC Schalke 04 have decided to remove the logo of main sponsor GAZPROM from the club’s shirts

Russia have almost declared war on Ukraine as Putin has said about a “special military operation”. There is a lot of tension going on between the two. Many have come out to protest against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

German football club Schalke’s main sponsor is Russia state-owned energy giant Gazprom. The 2. Bundesliga side has decided to remove the logo of main sponsor GAZPROM from the club’s shirts with immediate effect.

Schalke’s official statement read: “Following recent developments, FC Schalke 04 have decided to remove the logo of main sponsor GAZPROM from the club’s shirts. It will be replaced by lettering reading ‘Schalke 04’ instead.”

According to reports from Marca, UEFA have also decided to change the venue of the UEFA Champions League 2021-22 final from St. Petersburg after Russia attacked Ukraine.

“Following the evolution of the situation between Russia and Ukraine in the last 24 hours, the UEFA president has decided to call an extraordinary meeting of the executive committee …. in order to evaluate the situation and take all necessary decisions,” UEFA said in a statement.

The Ukrainian Premier League has been also suspended on Thursday due to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s decision to impose martial law. Ukraine’s football league was on a two-month winter break and was supposed to start from Friday but it has now been postponed indefinitely due to recent developments.
