Cagliari have reached a mutual agreement for the termination of Diego Godin’s contract, and have officially announced the departure of the veteran centre-back. The Uruguayan has now returned to South America, joining Brazilian champions Atletico Mineiro.

He has signed with Atletico Mineiro until December 2022, and has the option to extend his deal for another year.

Diego Godin returns to South America

The player started out his career with Cerro and Nacional in his native Uruguay, before signing for Villarreal in Spain. After three years with them, he joined Atletico Madrid in 2010 where he would spend nine years.

The defender won the 2014 La Liga with them, and also lifted two Europa League trophies. After establishing himself as an iconic club figure for the Rojiblancos, he left to join Inter Milan in 2019.

Diego Godin spent a year with the Nerazzurri before signing for Cagliari. He has played 40 times for them, and has now ended his time with them. Cagliari remain in the relegation zone in Serie A, and are having a poor season this time around.

Godin is the most capped player in the history of the Uruguayan national team. He has made 153 appearances for his country, and has played in three World Cups. The only major trophy he has won with the national team is the Copa America in 2010/11. As he is still going strong at 35, there is a very good chance we will see him captain the South American team for the next year at the very least.
