Apple reportedly to stick with the high-end market for its expensive Pro Display XDR

According to all accounts, Apple’s Pro Display XDR and its $4,999 price tag were absurdly high for ordinary people, and it was even more shocking to learn that the company was also selling a $999 stand. Fortunately, according to the newest source, Apple will abandon its plan to produce ultra-high-end displays for a niche market and instead choose a more inexpensive option that will cost half as much as the company’s flagship panel.

According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, the impending external display, which has yet to be given an official name, might cost $2,499 if we do the math. Gurman earlier indicated in December that Apple was working on a more value-oriented device that would likely appeal to the masses and sell in greater numbers due to its lower pricing.

The Pro Display XDR is primarily aimed at color-accurate work, but the exorbitant price tag could only be justified by big production houses and studios with access to such “over the top” reference displays. Given the lower price of the unnamed external monitor, it’s unclear what tradeoffs Apple will make in terms of the overall build, display type, display quality, color accuracy, and other parameters.

While Apple isn’t known for producing products that compromise on the aforementioned features, one has to wonder what approach the company will take to mass-produce the best possible product in the $2,499 price range. According to Gurman, the Pro Display XDR’s display production cost has likely decreased since its inception, which would be beneficial to Apple.

It would be interesting to see Apple take the daring step of incorporating mini-LED technology into its forthcoming external display, given the Cupertino giant’s move to the technology. In case you didn’t know, the M1 iPad Pro with a mini-LED screen has four times the number of dimming zones as the Pro Display XDR and costs one-fifth as much. The main disadvantage is that you get a 12.9-inch display rather than a 32-inch one, thus the benefit of employing mini-LED is obvious.

There’s still a lot we don’t know about the planned external monitor, but we’ll keep you updated as more information becomes available.
