Ferran Torres, a Spanish forward, has left Manchester City and joined LaLiga side Barcelona permanently, the two clubs announced on Tuesday.

The financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed, but British and Spanish media reported that Barcelona would pay around 55 million euros ($62.30 million) for the player, with an additional 10 million euros in add-ons.

Torres Left City

Torres has signed a contract extension until June 2027, with a 1-billion-euro release clause, according to Barcelona.

In a video, Torres said: “Hello Culers, I am very happy to announce that today I will join the club. See you soon.”

Torres joined City on a five-year deal from Valencia in August of last year and has made 43 appearances in all competitions for the English Premier League club, scoring 16 goals. Barcelona was forced to let their all-time leading scorer Lionel Messi leave this year due to “financial and structural obstacles” and debts totaling more than 1.35 billion euros.

Decrease in Attack Power

Barcelona’s attacking options were weakened further when Argentine forward Sergio Aguero retired this month at the age of 33 due to a heart condition.

Torres has not played since injuring his foot in Spain’s UEFA Nations League final loss to France in October. In 22 international appearances, the 21-year-old has scored 12 goals.

Barcelona are seventh in LaLiga after a poor start to the season that resulted in the sacking of coach Ronald Koeman, who has been replaced by former club captain Xavi Hernandez. Barcelona returns to action on January 2 after a winter break.
