Apple to release its rumoured AR Headset with focus on Gaming and Media in 2022

Several reports have surfaced regarding Apple’s rumoured AR headset, which can only mean that we may be dealing with a real product. The most recent information revolves around the device’s release date in 2022, and it appears that the company intends for the headset to be focused on both gaming and media consumption.

MacRumors mentions the reporter’s claim that the AR headset will include a fan in the latest ‘Power On’ newsletter by Mark Gurman. We will find out in the future whether the inclusion of an active cooling solution will disrupt the immersive experience for the user.

“Gaming should be a strong focus of the machine, especially given that it will have multiple processors, a fan, extremely high-resolution displays, and its own App Store. Look for Apple to position the device as a dream for game developers. Next, media consumption. I expect Apple to work with media partners to create content that can be watched in VR on the device. Third, communications. Look for Animojis and a VR FaceTime-like experience to be the new-age Zoom.”

According to a previous report, Apple’s AR headset will include two chipsets, which could make it a strong contender as a gaming headset. One will provide compute performance comparable to Apple’s M1, while the other will handle tasks such as sensor-related computations. The headset is also said to include a pair of Sony 4K micro-OLED panels, which are expected to give the AR headset VR capabilities, making it ideal for a device laser-focused on media consumption.

Gurman previously stated that the AR headset would be expensive, but he did not want to speculate on how much it would cost consumers. We’ve mentioned in previous reports that it could cost a whopping $3,000, implying that it’ll be a niche product rather than something made for the masses. However, it could cost as little as $1,000, making it more accessible to a wider range of customers.

However, as previously predicted by Gurman, Apple’s true AR headset could be up to four years away, implying that in less than a half-decade, you may not need to pair your iPhone to the device to unlock its full suite of capabilities. For the time being, the AR headset, like the Apple Watch, will be tethered. Stay tuned for more information about this ambitious product in the coming days.
