World Records Broken at the Tokyo Olympics

The 32nd Summer Olympic Games have come to an end. With no spectators, a plethora of Covid-related restrictions, and, to put it bluntly, local hostility to hosting the country’s signature event, this was a one-of-a-kind Olympic Games. In contrast, a flood of new records was set in a range of sports at Tokyo 2020.

Athletes from 205 national Olympic committees competed in 339 medal events, with one team made up entirely of refugees. With slightly under half of all competitors competing in women’s events, the Games were the most gender-equal ever.
