Bartomeu's mismanagement led to Messi's exit? Laporta reports €487m of losses last season

Messi ends his career at Barcelona, and today, FCB President Joan Laporta has openly admitted the facts and reasons why this happened. Among them, the effects from the previous board led by Bartomeu is one of the sole causes of Messi’s exit from the club.

Then you have LaLiga, who would not be flexible on the salary cap to register. Leo Messi and Laporta did explain how bad the club’s financial situation is that has forced it to reject the best player to stay at the Camp Nou.

Barça president Joan Laporta: “I spoke with Jorge Messi and Leo in the last hours… there’s no chance to continue together. We can’t go through because of the financial regulations, very sad but that’s it. New era”. 🚫 #Messi

Laporta said that he only got to know that they cannot register Messi to LaLiga. After the audit, Barca’s losses have accounted for €487m, which is more than double the previously estimated €200m loss. So, sadly, Messi cannot continue at the club even though they stretched the renewal to the very end of the transfer market.

Barça president Laporta: “We’ve shaken our hands with Leo Messi. The new contract was DONE. Two years salary but paid until 2026.

It was 100% AGREED, we had to SIGN yesterday. But then La Liga rules and reality came, I told to Jorge Messi yesterday… a cold shower”. 🚨🇦🇷 #Messi pic.twitter.com/GboJGBacBs

The agreement between the club and Leo Messi was 100% confirmed; however, when the signing was about to happen yesterday, the reality came in. Messi was even ready to continue 5 years at two years salaries that he had been earning at the club; still, because of the strict LaLiga financial rules, Messi could not be renewed.

Barça president Laporta: “Leo Messi is NOT happy. He wanted to STAY at Barcelona, as we wanted to keep Messi here. But we can’t change the reality now, I wish Leo the best wherever he will go as NEXT CLUB”. 🔴 #FCB #Messi

Obviously, this is very painful for Messi as he wanted to stay at the club, but because of the financial mess of the club, the Argentine has to seek to go to other clubs. Back a year ago, when he wanted to leave, but he wasn’t allowed by Bartomeu, and now he wants to stay, but for his mistakes, not even Laporta can match the financial fair play.

As we see, Laporta was an open state that they would sign Messi at any cost, but that would still hit 110% of the club’s revenue. Now, without Messi and new signings, the wage bill stands at 95%, which should be a lot lower for a club to sustain. Thanks to Bartomeu’s lengthy contracts and the astronomical wages, Lionel Messi has to leave the only club of his life.
