Qualcomm is seemingly nearing the final stages of working on its next generation flagship processor for mobiles. After initial reports suggested that the next chip would be the Snapdragon 895 and come with a certain set of performance improvements, a new leak claims that the chipset will be called the Qualcomm Snapdragon 898 instead, and has also underlined the performance specs that the chipset could entail.

The leak comes from popular tipster Ice Universe who claims that the next-generation Snapdragon 898 will be based on the latest 4nm process and have Cortex-X2 cores clocked at up to 3.09GHz. The leak doesn’t specify if the performance and power cores will employ the latest ARM IPs like Cortex-A710 and Cortex-A510 or not.

Snapdragon 898 chipset, Qualcomm’s new flagship processor leaked

Snapdragon 898 chipset details

Based on leaks and rumors so far, the chipset is likely to offer a single Cortex-X2 core, 3 Cortex-A710 cores, 2 high-frequency Cortex-A510 cores, and 2 low-frequency Cortex-A510 cores. The chipset is believed to have scored 1250 points in single-core and 4000 in multi-core on Geekbench. This is a noticeable improvement over the benchmark score of the current-gen flagship Snapdragon 888, but it is unlikely to surpass Apple’s next chipset.

Snapdragon 898 chipset is speculated to be built in Samsung’s 4nm process. But, it’s in the air that Qualcomm may shift to TSMC’s 4nm process by the second half of next year, probably with the ‘+’ variant of the chipset.

This is not the first time that Qualcomm has breached the 3.0GHz threshold, though. In fact, the Snapdragon 865+ also had its Prime Cortex-A77 core clocked at up to 3.09GHz and Qualcomm later backtracked with the Snapdragon 888. The reason for the same is quite clear now, even with lower clock speed, the Snapdragon 888 doesn’t score well when it comes to power efficiency.

Going by Qualcomm’s history of launching flagship chipsets, we expect the company to unveil the Snapdragon 898 sometime in December later this year.
