Paris Saint-Germain has already spent 250 million euros on transfer fees, wages and renewals in the summer. The club is yet to get Kylian Mbappe to sign a new contract with them. The heavyweight transfers and huge wages might prove to be a problem if UEFA’s FFP rules are summoned.
PSG will not be wanting to sell Mbappe at any cost. And to think that they might consider selling him to conform with FFP regulations will be naive. PSG and Manchester City have time and again found their way around the FFP rules. But this time, PSG might actually be at some risk financially.
Will Mbappe re-sign?
Nothing can be said with confirmation as of now. But the longer he takes to resign, the stronger it suggests towards the fact that he might leave. Mbappe has always dreamt of playing for Real Madrid. PSG President, Nasser Al-Khelaifi in a statement earlier, claimed that it is impossible for Mbappe to leave the French capital for free. Well, if he doesn’t sign an extension contract, he just might do the impossible.
Mbappe, who will be 23 when his PSG contract would expire in June 2022, has won it all except the coveted Champions League. He is, in all likelihood, one of the best players in current times. Having scored in a World Cup final where France went on to win the biggest stage was enough to prove his talent. He might be looking for newer pastures to win bigger and more silverware.
Money isn’t an issue for Mbappe if he leaves for Real. This transfer might be the difference between him and the Champions League trophy. Virtually state-backed clubs like Manchester City and PSG never have financial pressure to sell players. This means players can get stuck at the club. If Mbappe chooses to leave through the Bosman rules, it will be one of the bravest moves in recent history.
But are PSG willing to sell Mbappe?
PSG has spent almost 250 million euros already this summer. They need to recoup resources, not considering FFP, but to bring financial sense to the club’s business. Losing Mbappe for nothing in 2022 would be an embarrassment for the management at the Parc des Princes. Imagine the Paris-born starlet publicly declining to PSG’s project.
The Paris and Manchester regimes hold themselves in high regard. Their image means everything to them. These regimes have no interest in making money from owning a football club. They have way more abundant resources. Their only motive is to promote themselves or their state. Thus the control over decisions is ever so important. This is why it makes more sense to sell Mbappe this year for a huge sum rather than losing him for free in 2022.
PSG could easily point towards FFP regulations as a reason for Mbappe’s departure. PSG could then make a substantial signing after the sale to justify their stance even more. One of the club’s long-standing interests, Paul Pogba, could be that key transfer.
Where do Real Madrid fit in?
Real Madrid didn’t have any plans to do major business this summer. The pandemic has hit the Los Blancos’ finances too. If Mbappe war to be sold in this window, it could bring huge financial concerns for the club, which have dreamt for years to sign the Frenchman. Real will be looking forward to bring Mbappe on a Bosman in 2022. If Mbappe really wants to come to Madrid and Florentino Perez wants to get the youngster for free, they’ll somehow have to postpone it to 2022.
