More than three years after it was announced, DC’s new Batman still doesn’t have a costume. That candid admission from James Gunn says a lot about how the studio is building its universe. Let’s unpack it.
What Gunn Said on DCU Batman?
A fan asked on Threads whether Batman’s suit would share the texture of David Corenswet’s Superman costume. Gunn’s answer was short: “Batman’s suit isn’t designed yet.” The film, The Brave and the Bold, was announced in January 2023 as part of Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters. It still has no release date and no officially announced lead actor. In the same exchange, Gunn said he won’t write or direct the planned Teen Titans film, and that the DCEU’s Black Adam and Shazam! aren’t DCU canon. For more superhero news, bookmark Technosports.

Why So Slow?
Gunn said in January 2026 that two things were holding the film back. First, the screenplay wasn’t finished or good enough yet. Second, the studio didn’t want to muddy the waters while Matt Reeves’ The Batman: Part II was in production. The suit reveal suggests the design will come after the script is done and that film wraps. Gunn has repeatedly said he won’t greenlight projects with unsatisfactory scripts, so quality comes before speed.
The Story So Far
The original premise had Bruce Wayne discovering he has a biological son, Damian, who was secretly raised as an assassin. It was inspired largely by Grant Morrison’s comics, with Damian as Robin and other Bat-Family members joining. Gunn has since said creative plans have changed, without saying what shifted. Reeves’ films will be labeled Elseworlds, meaning they sit outside the main DCU canon. This Batman will also be tonally different from the gritty realism of The Batman, with an established crime-fighter and a larger supporting family. Is the Film in Trouble?
Not necessarily. Skipping the costume this early may simply mean DC Studios puts story first and design later. The long wait also gives the team time to separate its Dark Knight from Robert Pattinson’s version. Casting and production design still need to happen after the script, so a first look may be a long way off. If you’re following the wider DC slate, see our DCU timeline breakdown.
An undesigned suit is a small detail with a big message: the DCU’s Batman is being built carefully, even if that frustrates fans. Patience may pay off if the story is strong.
