Josh Brolin Marvel Wants Thanos Back, But Cable? Not So Much

Few actors have played two Marvel villains as iconic as Josh Brolin. One snapped half the universe away, the other time-traveled into Deadpool 2. Now Brolin has revealed which one he’d rather revisit, and the answer might surprise you.

What Brolin Actually Said?

Speaking to The Direct while promoting Whalefall at NYCC, Brolin was asked about returning as Cable. His answer was lukewarm. He appreciated the experience but said he was glad it stayed a self-contained chapter, calling it a good memory. That reads like a polite goodbye.

Why Thanos Gets the Warmer Response?

The tone changed completely when Thanos came up. Brolin said he had a lot of fun with the role and called it very interesting. He saved his biggest praise for directors Joe and Anthony Russo, describing them as unprecedented and unparalleled. He also shared that the brothers sometimes explained scenes with references he instinctively understood, like crime-classic Scarface, which made the performance even better.

That affection matters. Brolin has said before that he’d likely return as Thanos only if the Russos asked, and they’re now back at Marvel directing Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.

Is a Cable Return Dead?

Not necessarily, but the odds look slim. Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld has said he sees “much more meat on those bones” for Cable. He also revealed that Brolin originally signed a multi-picture deal and was excited about a planned X-Force movie with Drew Goddard, which would have featured both Cable and Stryfe. That project died after the Disney and Fox merger, and Brolin’s enthusiasm seems to have cooled with it.

Rumors suggest Ryan Reynolds may want a team-up Deadpool sequel that could bring Nathan Summers back, but with Marvel rebuilding its own X-Men, it’s unclear how many mutants the film can use.

Could Thanos Return?

Marvel has already shown it can raise the dead through the Multiverse, and several Endgame veterans are returning for Doomsday. With the Russos back in charge, a Thanos comeback before the Multiverse Saga ends feels plausible, though nothing is confirmed.
