Birla AI Labs Launches Yug-1: India’s Open Time-Series Forecasting Model Explained

Birla AI Labs, the AI arm of the Aditya Birla Group, has released Yug-1, a Made-in-India model built to forecast outcomes, spot patterns and detect unusual changes in data that moves through time. It is a compact model with 271.8 million parameters, and it is free to download for research, though not for commercial use.

Most AI headlines are about chatbots and language. Yug-1 is about something quieter but just as valuable: numbers over time, like sales, machine sensor readings, power demand or stock prices. What Is a Time Series Foundation Model?

According to its model card, Yug takes a history and a forecast horizon, and returns a predicted range of outcomes instead of a single guess, without extra training on your data.

How Does It Perform?

Ananya Birla says Yug-1 outperformed other first-generation models on the GiftEval benchmark and was competitive with newer-generation ones. Reports add that it beat Google’s TimesFM 2.0 and Amazon’s Chronos Bolt Base in recent benchmarks. These are the developer’s reported results, so independent testing will be the real proof.
