Lionel Messi and Barcelona have finally reached an agreement about the player’s new contract. His current deal will expire in two days, and Barcelona will possibly announce the extension within the next 48 hours.
The news comes from renowned transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, who maintains that Messi’s entourage has agreed a new deal until 2023 and only minor details remain to be sorted out between the two parties. While the contract officially runs out on June 30th, Barcelona could also wait until next week to announce the new deal since Messi is currently out on international duty with Argentina.
This is a massive turnaround from the summer of 2020, where the player handed in a transfer request under former president Josep Maria Bartoneu. However, he was convinced to stay for another season. Messi always said that money was never the problem and that the problem was the sporting project in place at the club.
Messi ended his season-long trophy drought with Barcelona by lifting the Copa del Rey in 2021, but has had to endure humiliating exits from the Champions League in each of the last 4 seasons. This past season, they missed out on the La Liga title by their own shortcomings and inconsistencies in the league.
So, even if the official deal expires, Barcelona fans need not worry since Messi will be staying at Camp Nou for the next two years at the least.
