What the Trailer Shows?
The first look moves fast. It opens with Sam and Caroline bonding over the maths of going “all in,” then follows them from young crypto founders hoping to change the world through effective altruism to the devastating realisation that $8 billion in customer funds has vanished. Along the way we glimpse luxurious Bahamian penthouses, frantic trading floors and the media and legal storm gathering around them, led by the Wall Street Journal.

The Story
Inspired by reporting from Kevin T. Dugan and Jen Wieczner for New York Magazine, the series follows two brilliant, ambitious young idealists who tried to reshape the global financial system almost overnight. Netflix describes them as Gen Z’s own Bonnie and Clyde, accused of stealing $8 billion. You can read more background on FTX and Sam Bankman-Fried on Wikipedia.
What makes it interesting is the angle. Creator Graham Moore says he believes both leads started as genuine altruists who wanted to do as much good as possible. Over the years the show covers, he suggests, they talked each other into serious crimes despite good intentions. Co-showrunner Jacqueline Hoyt promises an intimate story about people with morally conflicted motives, helping viewers understand why they acted as they did.
The Altruists: Cast
Julia Garner returns to Netflix, following Ozark and Inventing Anna, as Caroline Ellison, former CEO of Alameda Research. Anthony Boyle, recently seen in Masters of the Air and Manhunt, plays Sam Bankman-Fried. The wider ensemble includes:
- Alex Lawther as Sam Trabucco
- Karan Soni as Nishad Singh
- Matt Rife as Ryan Salame
- Madison Hu as Constance Wang
- Paul Reiser, Robin Weigert and Jennifer Grey in supporting roles
Behind the Camera
Beyond the Obamas’ Higher Ground Productions, the series is executive produced by Scoop Wasserstein for New York Magazine/Vox Media Studios, along with James Ponsoldt, Lauren Morelli and Julia Garner. Directing duties are shared by James Ponsoldt, Kyle Patrick Alvarez, Mairzee Almas, Graham Moore and Silver Tree.
Why It’s Worth Watching?
True-crime dramas about corporate collapses work best when they explain the human side, and this one promises exactly that. With an Oscar-winning writer, a strong cast and a limited-series format that avoids filler, it looks like one of November’s most talked-about releases.
