Ray Gunn drops audiences into Metropia, a towering Art Deco metropolis where humans and aliens coexist, flying cars fill the skies, and buildings stretch a mile high. At its center is Raymond Gunn (voiced by Sam Rockwell), a hardboiled private detective who still does legwork the old-fashioned way, even as tiny robots have taken over most investigative work. Bird himself describes the concept simply: “The Maltese Falcon meets Buck Rogers.”
The Case That Pulls Everything Together
Ray Gunn Trailer: Gunn’s world gets upended when Venus Nova (Scarlett Johansson), one of Metropia’s biggest and most scandal-prone stars, enters his orbit. Alongside his one-eyed alien partner Eyera (voiced by Tom Waits), Gunn is pulled into a mystery spanning murder, corruption, and the city’s glamorous-yet-seedy underworld. The voice cast also includes Patton Oswalt, Kathryn Hunter, John Ratzenberger, and Jamie Costa.

A Passion Project Decades in the Making
Bird first conceived Ray Gunn early in his career, originally developing it at Turner Feature Animation in the 1990s before shelving it to direct The Iron Giant. Decades later, it’s finally arriving as a limited theatrical release timed to qualify for the 99th Academy Awards, before heading to Netflix.
Why It Matters
This marks the final release under Netflix and Skydance Animation’s multi-year partnership, which the two studios mutually agreed to conclude early. Fittingly, it closes that chapter with what looks like one of the year’s most visually ambitious animated films.
