Suchika Tariyal has confirmed India’s maiden medal in mixed martial arts after defeating Mongolia’s 2025 IMMAF World Champion Altanchimeg Baigalmaa 2-0 in the women’s traditional 60kg quarter-final at Nagoya City Inae Sports Center.

Since MMA has no third-place playoff at these Games, every fighter reaching the semi-finals is assured of at least bronze — making the 36-year-old’s win a historic breakthrough as the sport makes its Asian Games debut in Aichi-Nagoya.
A Journey Built on Reinvention
Tariyal’s road here wasn’t straightforward. She first made her mark in judo, winning gold at the 2019 Commonwealth Judo Championships and the 2019 South Asian Games, before competing at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and later representing India in kurash at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou. In 2024, she added a jiu-jitsu world title, winning gold at the JJIF World Championships.
When India’s jiu-jitsu team was dropped from the Asian Games contingent in January, Tariyal pivoted to MMA trials. After qualification rules shifted mid-process, she self-funded her trip to the Asian Championships, winning bronze medals that secured her a spot in the Sports Ministry’s Target Asian Games Group scheme.

Tariyal returns to the mat on 21st September at 7:00 AM IST for her semi-final, facing the winner between Iran’s Arezou Salimighalehtaki and Singapore’s Teoh Hui Hoon. A win would send her straight into the gold-medal contest.
