Marvel’s next Disney+ series isn’t just chasing bigger action set pieces — it’s aiming straight at something the MCU has quietly danced around for years: toxic masculinity. And Paul Bettany just confirmed it head-on.

What Paul Bettany revealed?

Speaking with SFX Magazine, Bettany said “VisionQuest” spends real time examining “toxic male energy” before steering it toward something healthier. His words: “Much of our time is spent talking about sort of toxic male energy, and this is really positive male energy about fathers and sons and grandfathers having a conversation in the wonderful broad church that Marvel is.” All of it, he noted, gets wrapped in full action and emotional drama rather than feeling like a lecture.

The family at the center of it all

This isn’t a random theme — it’s baked into the show’s structure. Marvel Television’s Brad Winderbaum has described “VisionQuest” as the fatherhood counterpart to “Agatha All Along,” which explored motherhood, closing out the “WandaVision” trilogy on themes of parenthood. Winderbaum framed the show around a blunt question: can a man raised by an abusive father actually become a good father himself?

The MCU’s answer plays out through an unusual family tree. Vision (Paul Bettany) becomes a father figure to Tommy Maximoff (Ruaridh Mollica) — Wanda’s son, reborn in a new body — while Ultron (James Spader) returns as a twisted grandfather figure, uploaded directly into Vision’s own mind.

Why the tension runs deep?

Vision now switches between his classic robotic form and a bearded human avatar, and he’s not alone in his own head — JARVIS, FRIDAY, EDITH, and other MCU AIs reportedly appear there too, adding layers of inherited baggage he never actually lived through. Tommy, understandably, isn’t thrilled about sharing a father with “a genocidal maniac,” while Ultron urges Vision in the trailer to “free us all, and save your son” — leaving open whether that’s manipulation or genuine intent.

Toxic masculinity has surfaced in the MCU before, from Tony Stark’s ego to John Walker’s aggression as Captain America’s replacement, but “VisionQuest” appears to be the first project built specifically around unpacking it. It’s a theme that connects to broader conversations happening across pop culture right now, echoing how Marvel Comics has long used superhero storytelling to explore real social issues beneath the spectacle.

What else to Expect?

Todd Stashwick’s Paladin, described by Matalas as “the Boba Fett of the Marvel Universe,” adds a bounty-hunter threat chasing Vision’s advanced tech. The season is also expected to plant seeds for a future Young Avengers project through Tommy and Billy Maximoff (Joe Locke), while Vision himself debuts a sleek new costume some fans believe hints at his role in “Avengers: Secret Wars.”
