The Gentlemen Season 2 Viewership Slump: Why Guy Ritchie’s Comeback Fell Short of Season 1’s Numbers

After a two-and-a-half-year wait, Guy Ritchie’s aristocratic weed-empire drama is finally back — but its return has been far bumpier than fans expected. Despite strong reviews and buzzy headlines, The Gentlemen Season 2 opened to nearly half the audience of its 2024 debut, raising real questions about what went wrong.

The Gentlemen Season 2: Overview

Both seasons launched on a Thursday, giving analysts a clean four-day opening-weekend comparison — and the gap is stark.

That 45% decline places The Gentlemen among the more disappointing sophomore outings on Netflix this year, sitting in the lower-middle of the pack alongside shows like Running Point and The Recruit.

Why the Drop? It’s Not Just This Show

Netflix has been grappling with a platform-wide “Season 2 slump,” where sequel seasons routinely underperform their predecessors’ viral debuts. Very few titles — Ginny & Georgia and Bridgerton among the rare exceptions — actually grow their audience in season two. The 2.5-year gap between Gentlemen seasons likely didn’t help either: Season 1 has surged back into the Top 10, suggesting many viewers were busy rewatching it to catch up rather than diving straight into the new episodes.

Is There Hope for a Rebound?

Historically, Thursday releases peak in week two once they get a full Monday-to-Sunday viewing window. Season 1 jumped 65% in its second week — if Season 2 mirrors that pattern, especially with rewatchers of Season 1 catching up, it could see a solid recovery. The good news for fans: Netflix has already renewed the show for Season 3, regardless of how the opening numbers shake out. You can track the show’s real-time performance on Netflix’s official Top 10 site.
