“Descendants of the Sun” Gets a Full Indonesian Film Remake — 10 Years After It Broke Records

A decade after it turned Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-kyo into household names across Asia, “Descendants of the Sun” is getting a brand-new life — this time as a feature film made entirely for Indonesian audiences. Production company NEW confirmed the remake on September 7, and it’s already finished filming.

What’s Actually Happening

Titled “Descendants of the Sun Indonesia” (working title), the film reimagines the beloved 2016 K-drama with local settings and cultural sensibilities, rather than simply dubbing the original. It’s slated for a 2027 theatrical release in Indonesia, with a Korean release also being planned.

The original series — which followed a soldier and a surgeon falling in love in the middle of a warzone — hit a jaw-dropping 38.8% peak viewership rating when it aired in 2016 and became one of the biggest catalysts of the modern Korean Wave.

Descendants of the Sun: The Remake

Why Hanung Bramantyo Is the Right Choice

Director Hanung Bramantyo isn’t new to turning Korean hits into local blockbusters — his Indonesian remake of Miracle in Cell No. 7 became a massive box-office success and even spawned a sequel and animated spin-off. That track record is exactly why NEW picked him to lead this bigger, more ambitious global adaptation.

A Growing Trend in K-Content Exports

This isn’t the first time Descendants of the Sun has traveled abroad — it previously inspired adaptations in the Philippines and Taiwan. But this Indonesian version stands out because NEW is co-producing from the ground up, signaling a shift from simply licensing remake rights to actively shaping how K-dramas get reborn overseas.
