It has been 100 days since Joan Laporta was elected president of Barcelona. Laporta started working on his sporting project as soon as he gained power. The new Blaugrana supremo has been actively working on the club behind the scenes while also making several additions to the first-team squad.
On 17 March, we saw Laporta cement his position as the new Barcelona supreme; again! Some other key appointments included:
- Rafael Yuste – Vice President and Head of the Sports Area
- Elena Fort – Vice President and Head of the Social Area
- Eduard Romeu – Vice President and Head of the Economic Area
We saw this newly appointed team wasting no time getting down to business. Since then a lot has happened. Let’s have a look!
The team’s performance across Europe
Barcelona men’s team lifted the Copa del Rey after beating Athletic Bilbao in a sensational performance. In the later stages of LaLiga, we also witnessed the men’s team fall short after dropping points disappointingly. Barca was also eliminated from the Champions League at the Round of 16 stages with a humiliating home loss against PSG. FCB Femeni, the women’s side won the Champions League in phenomenal style. Honestly speaking, the women’s side was a force to reckon with this season.
Laporta’s 2021-22 Season Plans
Joan Laporta has decided to retain Ronald Koeman as the manager of the men’s team. Although there is a looming uncertainty on Koeman’s future at the club with speculations of his replacement mid-season. Barcelona B team boss Garcia Pimienta was rather surprisingly sacked. Sergi Barjuan has been appointed as his replacement.
Laporta’s Barcelona have also shown an unwavering support towards the creation of a European Super League. Only Real Madrid and Juventus are the other clubs promoting the idea.
As far as recruitments are concerned, Jordi Cruyff has returned to the club in a non-playing role. There have also been several first-team signings including Eric Garcia and Sergio Aguero from Manchester City. The club also purchased the full rights of Real Betis defender Emerson Royal.
