Instagram is implementing a new “AI-generated profile” label, replacing its previous “AI creator” designation. The update, announced by the Meta-owned social media platform, is designed to enhance transparency by clearly indicating when a profile features an AI-generated person rather than a human.

The initiative will also introduce measures to limit the reach of profiles that feature an AI-generated person but are not appropriately labeled. Conversely, creators who proactively apply the new label will not experience any change to their profile’s visibility.

Instagram : Addressing User Feedback on AI Identity

This policy adjustment stems from user feedback indicating a preference for clearer identification when interacting with profiles that initially appear human but are subsequently revealed to be AI-generated. The platform noted that users desire to understand the nature of the profiles they encounter.

The introduction of the “AI-generated profile” label builds on insights gained from earlier testing of the “AI creator” label. Under the updated system, creators who previously used the “AI creator” label will be prompted to review and confirm or remove the new “AI-generated profile” label. The platform clarifies that the label is intended for profiles featuring an AI-generated person, not for creators who merely use AI tools as part of their broader creative process.

Impact on Profile Reach and Compliance

For profiles featuring an AI-generated person that remain unlabeled, creators are encouraged to apply the label through their profile settings. Once applied, the label will appear on their profile and alongside their content, unless specific media already carries an AI creation or editing label.

Profiles that are identified by Instagram as featuring an AI-generated person but do not carry the appropriate label may face limitations on their reach. The platform plans to notify detected unlabeled profiles, allowing creators to check their Account Status for eligibility regarding recommendations.

Creators whose unlabeled profiles become non-recommendable have two avenues to restore eligibility:
1. Add the Label: Apply the “AI-generated profile” label to accurately reflect the profile’s AI-based identity.
2. Appeal the Decision: Creators can appeal restrictions if they believe the detection was made in error. Successful appeals will restore the profile and its content’s eligibility for recommendations.

This development aligns with Instagram’s broader commitment to improving transparency surrounding AI-generated content and helping users better understand the identities behind the content and profiles they engage with on the platform.
