Cherki's Stellar Performance Leads Man City to Victory

Rayan Cherki scored twice in five minutes to turn a cagey Selhurst Park contest into a statement 4-1 victory for Manchester City over Crystal Palace on Friday, August 28, 2026.

The French forward struck in the 54th and 59th minutes, turning a tight Premier League fixture into a rout within the space of one attacking sequence.

The 54th–59th Minute Window That Broke Palace

City arrived at Selhurst Park seeking a second consecutive Premier League win, but the first 45 minutes offered little hint of what was coming.

Metric	Cherki	Haaland	Palace
Goals	2	2	1 (own goal)
Goal window	54’–59′	Spread across match	N/A
Manager verdict	“Complete” (Maresca)	N/A	Spoiled welcome (Sage)

That five-minute window from Cherki, combined with Erling Haaland’s brace, gave City the cushion they needed to weather Palace’s lone reply, an unusual own goal that offered the hosts nothing more than a footnote.

Cherki's 'Complete' Performance Fuels Man City Win at Selhurst Park

Maresca’s “Complete” Verdict on Cherki’s performance Man City Needed

Head coach Enzo Maresca was unequivocal in his assessment. According to ESPN’s match report, Maresca described Cherki’s display as a “complete” performance, singling out the Frenchman’s work off the ball and his pressing when Palace had possession.

For a player whose defensive application has often been questioned since his arrival, that public endorsement from the touchline carries weight. The praise landed because Cherki delivered on both sides of the ball.

His two finishes were clinical, but it was his intensity without possession, hunting Palace defenders and forcing turnovers in advanced areas, that allowed Maresca to use the word “complete” without caveat.

Cherki’s self-assessment was more measured, calling his own contribution “so-so,” yet the numbers told a different story to anyone watching live.

Two From Two: City’s Perfect Premier League Start

The result lifted Manchester City to six points from their opening two Premier League fixtures, a perfect record that places them alongside the early pace-setters at the summit of the table.

ESPN’s round-up framed the evening as the “Rayan Cherki and Erling Haaland show,” underscoring how the attacking pair shared the goalscoring burden. For Palace, the night carried a different emotional register. Manager Pierre Sage, taking charge of his first home fixture, saw his “welcome party” spoiled by Cherki’s quickfire double. The own goal that pulled one back for the hosts offered brief respite, but the margin reflected the gulf on the night. For more detail, see BBC Sport.

What’s Next for Both Sides

City will take momentum into the September international break, with Maresca likely to keep faith in a front line that finally clicked after the interval. The challenge now is consistency, converting promising first halves into early leads rather than waiting for second-half interventions.

Cherki’s two goals in five minutes showed what this attack can do when it finds its rhythm. Palace face a reset. Sage must address the defensive structure that allowed City to score four, while finding ways to generate attacking threat of their own. The own goal masked a toothless offensive display that will concern the new coaching staff far more than the scoreline suggests. For Cherki, the night offered validation. Two goals, a manager’s public endorsement, and a perfect league start, all within 90 minutes at Selhurst Park. For more detail, see BBC Sport.

Cherki’s 2 goals in 5 minutes powered a 4-1 win that kept Manchester City perfect in the Premier League at 2 wins from 2.
