GTA VI Just Broke Netflix’s Servers — And Confirmed the Date Fans Have Waited Years For

4,727 days. That’s how long fans waited for this moment. And when Rockstar Games finally dropped a 26-minute gameplay deep dive into Vice City on Netflix, the internet nearly broke trying to watch it.

What Actually Happened During the Premiere

Right at 3:00 PM ET, Netflix’s desktop site briefly buckled under traffic, throwing a sitewide “Something Went Wrong” error for a few refreshes before recovering. Mobile and TV app viewers got a smoother ride, though compression quality left something to be desired. Downdetector logged a spike in reported issues five minutes before and after the reveal — a small price for a wait this long.

GTA VI: Overview

Inside the Footage

The presentation opens with Jason and Lucia hunting down a contact named “Boobie” — and immediately teases a brand-new morality system. At one point, Jason stops to pet a dog, triggering an “angel” icon, suggesting Vice City will track your good and bad choices throughout the game.

The deal predictably goes sideways into a full shootout, with Jason and Lucia fighting side-by-side through a police raid before escaping via elevator, dropping a loaded lore question along the way: “Was that Menendez?”

Beyond the action, the footage leaned into quieter, character-driven moments too — a scene of the couple getting ready for a party that felt more grounded than chaotic. From there, viewers got glimpses of the sprawling State of Leonida: fan boats through swamps, scuba diving, strip clubs, in-game livestreamers, and a now-infamous diner robbery scene that closely mirrors the leaked 2022 alpha footage, just far more polished this time.

The night ended on a high-stakes security gig showcasing slow-motion gunplay and a brutal stairwell brawl, all wrapped up with a title card confirming the entire sequence ran on a base PS5 — arguably the biggest technical flex of the whole reveal.

Massive pre-release gameplay reveals for high-profile titles have become a growing trend in game marketing, part of the broader evolution of video game marketing strategies documented on Wikipedia’s overview of video game marketing.
