Xbox Launches Disc-to-Digital: Turn Your Discs Into Downloads

While Sony prepares to phase out physical PlayStation discs entirely by 2028, Microsoft’s Xbox is taking the opposite approach — giving physical media new life instead of killing it. Xbox has officially announced Disc-to-Digital, a feature that lets players convert their existing physical game discs into digital entitlements, keeping the disc fully functional in the process.

How It Actually Works

The mechanic is refreshingly simple. Insert a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc into a compatible console and launch the game once — that single action claims a digital entitlement tied to your account. From there, you get full digital benefits, including Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming support where available, all while the physical disc keeps working exactly as it always has. The Catch: One License, Tied to the Disc

There’s an important nuance buried in the fine print. The digital entitlement is revocable and tied to the specific disc — if you hand that disc to someone else or sell it, you lose the associated digital license. It’s less like duplicating ownership and more like unlocking a digital backup copy that stays linked to your original physical copy. Full details are available in Xbox’s official announcement on Xbox Wire.

Why Now? The Sony Contrast Is Impossible to Miss

The timing here isn’t coincidental. This announcement lands shortly after Sony confirmed it will end physical disc manufacturing for PlayStation games released after January 2028 — a decision that’s drawn significant backlash from fans of physical media. Xbox positioning Disc-to-Digital as part of a “broader commitment to game preservation” reads as a direct, if unstated, response to that industry shift.

Xbox has also faced its own rough stretch recently, including studio closures and a console price increase this month, so this feature doubles as a rare piece of consumer-friendly news amid otherwise difficult headlines for the brand.

What’s Missing (For Now)

A few limitations are worth flagging. Xbox Series S owners are excluded entirely, since the feature requires a disc drive the Series S doesn’t have. There’s also no confirmation yet on whether older original Xbox or Xbox 360 discs will ever be supported — the program currently covers only Xbox One and Xbox Series X titles. Not every disc-based game will be available at launch either, though Microsoft says its supported library will keep expanding over time.

When Can You Try It?

Xbox Insiders can begin testing Disc-to-Digital starting August 31, 2026, with a wider public rollout expected to follow afterward, though no exact date has been confirmed yet. Keep following our Xbox and console gaming coverage for updates as the feature exits testing and rolls out more broadly.
