The Story Behind the Celebration

Onam commemorates the annual return of the mythical King Mahabali, a ruler remembered in Kerala’s folklore for presiding over an era of prosperity and equality. Believers say he visits his people once a year on Thiruvonam, which is why the day is marked with such joyous homecoming energy.
