Netflix Just Pulled Off Its Own Caper — Nabbing Australia’s Hit Comedy ‘Caper Crew’

Grab the popcorn, because Netflix has struck again. Fresh off a string of Aussie TV acquisitions, the streamer has snapped up global rights (Australia excluded) to Caper Crew, the ABC’s breakout family comedy that’s already got audiences hooked Down Under.

If you love a good heist story wrapped in family chaos, this one’s about to land on your watchlist — and honestly, the premise alone is worth the hype.

What’s the Story?

Caper Crew follows siblings Amelia and Kai Delaney, whose ordinary lives flip upside down when their grandmother Queenie — a lifelong con artist — starts teaching them the tricks of the trade. Cue a treasure hunt for the priceless Woodspring Nugget, run-ins with real-deal grifters, and one terrifying school canteen lady named Gretchen.

The series takes inspiration from the real 1960s “Kangaroo Gang,” a band of Australian con artists who pulled off jewelry heists across Europe — you can read more about organized theft crews like this on Wikipedia’s jewel thieves category.

Why This Matters for Netflix Fans

This marks Netflix’s second big Australian pickup in recent months, alongside Hugo Weaving’s The Airport Chaplain and the hit comedy Fisk. It’s proof that Netflix is doubling down on Aussie storytelling — quirky, sharp, and full of heart.
