“Learn Our Culture First”: Venky Atluri’s Reality Check for Bollywood Stars Eyeing South Cinema

Cross-industry collabs are booming, but director Venky Atluri just reminded everyone that fame doesn’t buy a shortcut. The Lucky Baskhar filmmaker has a simple, no-nonsense message for Hindi actors chasing Telugu roles: adapt first, act later.

What Venky Atluri Actually Said

In a candid chat with The Hollywood Reporter India, Atluri didn’t sugarcoat it. He said he’d personally take a three-month break to study a Hindi set before ever shooting one — and he expects Bollywood actors stepping into Telugu cinema to show the same respect for local methods.

His bigger point? Telugu film sets are known for long, demanding hours, and no star, regardless of where they’re from, gets a pass on that.

Venky Atluri: Core Message

Why This Conversation Matters Right Now

This isn’t happening in a vacuum. Pan-India cinema is the industry’s biggest growth story, and A-listers from Mumbai are actively courting South directors for their next big roles. But the shift hasn’t been friction-free — Deepika Padukone’s exit from Kalki 2 and Spirit sparked wide debate over working conditions in South productions, making Atluri’s comments feel especially timely.

Interestingly, the debate echoes a broader pattern seen across Telugu cinema, one of India’s largest film industries by output and box-office scale, where rigorous shooting schedules have long been part of the production culture.

Bottom Line

Atluri’s remarks boil down to one idea: respect isn’t optional when you’re a guest in someone else’s industry. As more Bollywood names head South, this “adapt or step back” attitude may well become the new norm on set.
