Nolan’s The Odyssey Sails Past Rs. 140 Crore — But a Web-Slinger Is Waiting

Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” just wrapped its second weekend in India, adding Rs. 36.25 crore to push its total past Rs. 140 crore nett in just 10 days. But with “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” swinging into theaters next week, the film’s momentum is about to face its toughest test yet.

The Odyssey: Weekend Numbers

The film collected a steady Rs. 14 crore on both its second Saturday and Sunday, though trade watchers note it should have seen more of a Sunday spike than it did — the numbers stayed largely flat instead. Starring Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, and Tom Holland, “The Odyssey” is now projected to close out this week somewhere around Rs. 155-160 crore nett.

The Spider-Man Challenge Ahead

Next weekend brings “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” into the mix, and early advance booking numbers suggest it’s off to a phenomenal start in India — a clear warning sign for any holdover release still in theaters. If “The Odyssey” can hold its ground against that kind of competition, trade estimates suggest it could still finish its full run in the Rs. 190-200 crore range.

Why Nolan Still Draws a Crowd

Much of the film’s strength comes down to the director himself. Christopher Nolan has become something of a shorthand for prestige filmmaking in India, with his recent releases — including a theatrical re-release of “Interstellar” — consistently drawing strong demand. That said, epic historical drama isn’t traditionally a genre that performs big in the Indian market, much like it was for “Oppenheimer.” Trade watchers note that a more broadly commercial Nolan film, in the vein of “Inception,” could likely push these numbers even higher.

Christopher Nolan has built one of the most respected filmographies in modern cinema, known for blending large-scale spectacle with complex storytelling — you can read more about his career on Wikipedia.

What’s Next

With “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” set to dominate screens starting this weekend, “The Odyssey” will need to hold steady to protect its shot at crossing the Rs. 190-200 crore mark by the end of its run.
