The Walking Dead: Dead City Returns With Maggie and Negan Finally Trying to Build Something Instead of Just Surviving

A year off the air, and this uneasy alliance is walking straight back into trouble. “The Walking Dead: Dead City” Season 3 brings Maggie and Negan together to actually build a home in Manhattan this time — which, given their history, was never going to stay peaceful for long.

From Uneasy Truce to Genuine Partnership

Season 2 ended on rocky terms, with Maggie and Negan far from good standing after she stabbed him during their conflict over control of Manhattan. Season 3 picks up with both characters attempting something new: putting their differences aside to build the first real community in Manhattan since the apocalypse began. Naturally, rising threats and old grudges make that trust difficult to maintain.

A New Showrunner Taking Over

Seth Hoffman steps in as the new showrunner this season, replacing Eli Jorné, and brings prior experience from working on the original “The Walking Dead” series. That change, combined with reportedly stronger early reviews than Season 2 received, suggests the creative team is aiming to correct course after a season that drew mixed reactions from fans and critics.

Familiar Faces and New Additions

Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan return as Maggie and Negan, with Logan Kim also back as Hershel. The season adds Gaius Charles and Željko Ivanek in recurring roles, alongside several new cast members joining this chapter of the story.

A Compact, Weekly Season

Dead City Season 3 runs for eight episodes, airing weekly on Sunday nights through its September 13 finale — a notably tighter turnaround than some other entries in the Walking Dead universe. With The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon’s fourth and final season also on the horizon, Dead City remains one of the last active spin-offs still building out this franchise’s future.
