DoT allocates spectrum for 5G trials to Telecom operators in India

The permission for the 5G trial in India had been given by the Department of Telecom (DoT) last month. Now for your information, the duration of the trials in India is for a period of 6 months. This includes a time period of 2 months for procurement and setting up of the equipment all over the various parts of the country before starting the test.

A telecom company official said, “Telecom operators have been allocated spectrum in 700 Mhz bands, 3.3-3.6 Gigahertz (GHz) bands, and 24.25-28.5 GHz band across various locations,” So there are three types of 5G bands allocated for different operators operating on various locations across India.

In the meanwhile, on May 4 just after the permission granted, DoT had approved applications from Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea, and MTNL for conducting 5G trials in the country with strict restrictions to avoid using technologies from Chinese companies.

Thus telecom operators like Jio, Airtel, etc. will be investing in the trials of 5G spectrums allocated to them and the testing will be conducted at various locations across the country including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Gujarat, Hyderabad, among others, according to industry sources. But sources claim none of the telecom operators has been allocated spectrum in Punjab, Haryana, and the union territory of Chandigarh.

According to TechGig, the Department of Telecom had also approved trials of 5G with Ericsson, NokiaSamsung, and C-DOT in the country, and in addition to that, Reliance Jio Infocomm will be conducting trials using its own indigenous technology.

The permission letters specify that each telecom service provider will have to conduct trials in rural and semi-urban settings in addition to urban settings so that the benefit of the 5G technology proliferates across the country. So that not only urban areas but also other parts of the countries can also experience the same technology in rural and semi-urban areas.

Testing of 5G will be done on different factors like telemedicine, tele-education, and drone-based agriculture monitoring, etc. Apart from smartphone 5G bands, there will be another testing as well, because 5G technology is expected to deliver ten times better download speed than that of 4G and up to three times greater spectrum efficiency.
