What’s Changing Behind the Scenes

Series star Zahn McClarnon, who plays Lt. Joe Leaphorn, is stepping behind the camera for his television directorial debut this season. The show remains led by creator Graham Roland and showrunner John Wirth, with George R.R. Martin among its executive producers.

What to Expect on Screen

Season 5 picks up the fallout from Season 4’s biggest twist — the murder of Acting Chief Gordo Sena. John Hoogenakker joins as Sheriff Mark Bishop, Gordo’s replacement, who’s expected to clash with Leaphorn over jurisdiction. On the personal side, Bernadette Manuelito and Jim Chee are set to get married, while Bernadette’s estranged father, played by Gregory Cruz, re-enters her life after years apart.

The series, based on the Leaphorn & Chee novels central to the broader tradition of American detective fiction, has maintained a rare 100% Rotten Tomatoes score across its run and has racked up 233 million viewing hours on Netflix to date.

When Will It Hit Netflix?

Based on the show’s historical licensing pattern — Season 4 arrived roughly five months after its AMC premiere — Season 5 is expected to land on Netflix around summer or early fall 2027, assuming the AMC-Netflix licensing deal continues.
