Everton midfielder James Rodriguez left England early before the end of the 2020-21 season for Copa America. He wanted to return to Colombia and prepare for Copa America. So, he was allowed to miss Everton’s final match of the season against Manchester City, which they lost 5-0 away from home.

The Colombian international has suffered numerous injuries throughout the season, and recent medical examinations showed that he is not at 100%. Therefore, he hasn’t been included in the Euro 2021 squad by Colombia.

The Colombian Football Federation’s statement read: “The coaching staff of the Colombia Senior Men’s National Team inform that the player James Rodriguez has been withdrawn from the qualifying games against Peru and Argentina for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and the CONMEBOL Copa America 2021,”

“In recent days, the midfielder underwent medical examinations, which determined that he is not at the optimum level of fitness to compete, which is why he will not be able to join the group of players called up by [head coach] Reinaldo Rueda for the aforementioned matches and the South American tournament.”

“The coach and his staff regret not being able to call up James Rodriguez on this occasion and hope that soon the midfielder will be able to be part of a squad list, representing our country with the same professionalism and stature as he has always done.”

James Rodriquez scored the wonder goal for Colombia in the 2014 World Cup, which made him famous and was eventually signed by Real Madrid. After a struggling period at Madrid, he signed for Everton last season. Despite some glimpses of quality, he has failed to establish himself in the Premier League. He has made 80 appearances for Colombia and scored 23 goals, and provided 25 assists.
