Netflix’s “Icebreaker” Adaptation Begins Filming This September — Everything We Know So Far

Enemies-to-lovers stories never go out of style, especially when they’re set against the backdrop of a shared ice rink. Netflix has confirmed its adaptation of Hannah Grace’s bestselling YA romance “Icebreaker,” and cameras start rolling this fall.

What “Icebreaker” Is About

The story follows figure skater Anastasia Allen, who earns a scholarship spot on her university’s competitive skating team, only to be forced to share rink time with the hockey team after a facilities mishap. Its captain, Nate Hawkins, is someone she can’t stand — until an uncertain future for her skating partner pushes her to consider a partnership with him instead, sparking the kind of tension the genre is known for.

Behind The Adaptation

Why This One Stands Out

Showrunner Amanda Lasher described being drawn to steamy YA fiction since her early teenage years, expressing enthusiasm about adapting Grace’s story for the screen. Co-writer Jade Bartlett similarly praised the novel’s mix of ambition and heart, noting the characters are ultimately grounded by real compassion beneath the romantic tension.

The Bigger Picture

“Icebreaker” joins a growing wave of sports-romance adaptations heading to streaming, arriving alongside other Netflix YA projects and reflecting the platform’s continued investment in book-to-screen romance. The genre’s appeal often traces back to the broader tradition of young adult fiction, known for pairing high-stakes emotion with coming-of-age storytelling.
