Amitabh Bachchan Reveals the Real Reason Behind His Legendary Work Ethic — And It’s Not Ambition

At 83, most people expect legends to romanticize their glory days. Instead, Amitabh Bachchan did something far more honest — he admitted that raw fear, not passion alone, was what kept him juggling up to 15 films at once during Bollywood’s golden era.

In his latest personal blog post, the veteran actor drew a striking contrast between today’s meticulously prepared performers and the chaotic, instinct-driven filmmaking of his own generation — where actors often had no idea what scene they were shooting until moments before the camera rolled.

Then vs. Now: How Filmmaking Has Changed in Amitabh Bachchan?

Why He Really Took On So Many Films

Bachchan explained that back then, actors barely had a concept of “prep” the way today’s artists do, admitting genuine admiration for the intense character work modern actors now put in. Directors, he noted, would simply brief the cast on the floor right before filming began — leaving no room for the kind of research actors rely on today.

As for why he pushed himself to work on so many projects simultaneously, Bachchan was refreshingly candid: the fear of not knowing whether work would come again pushed him to adapt sincerely to whatever role came his way, regardless of how little preparation time he had. He even recalled having to wait months after filming just to see how a performance had actually turned out on screen.

It’s a rare, unfiltered glimpse into the anxiety that shaped one of cinema’s most decorated careers — proof that even icons build empires on uncertainty as much as talent.
