Hitman Gets His Padma Shri: Rohit Sharma’s Crowning Civilian Honour

Rohit Sharma just added a medal that no boundary or century could ever buy. On June 23, 2026, President Droupadi Murmu conferred the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award, on the former Indian captain at the second Civil Investiture Ceremony in Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi.

It’s the kind of honour that goes beyond the scoreboard — recognising not just runs and records, but years of leadership, consistency, and the quiet weight of carrying a billion expectations.

Why Rohit Deserved This

Rohit’s case for the Padma Shri was never really in doubt. As captain, he ended India’s 17-year ICC title drought by lifting the T20 World Cup 2024 in Barbados, then followed it up with the Champions Trophy 2025 crown in Dubai. Two ICC trophies in two years — a captaincy record few can match.

His numbers back the legend: he’s smashed 11,720 ODI runs across 285 matches at an average of 48.83, and he holds the world record for the highest individual ODI score. Off the back of that record-breaking white-ball career, he also became cricket’s all-time leading six-hitter — a feat TechnoSports covered in detail when he overtook Shahid Afridi’s record.

Not the Only Cricketer in the Spotlight

Rohit wasn’t alone on the stage. India’s ODI World Cup-winning women’s captain Harmanpreet Kaur and hockey star Savita Punia also received the Padma Shri, while tennis legend Vijay Amritraj was honoured with the Padma Bhushan.

A Career Built for This Moment

From a teenager in Mumbai’s maidans to India’s most successful white-ball skipper, Rohit’s journey has been a slow-burn masterclass in leadership. His trophy cabinet — covered extensively in our piece on his full list of titles as captain — already reads like a Hall of Fame résumé, even before this national honour.

And the “Hitman” tag isn’t going anywhere either — he’s still piling on runs at the top of the order, as seen in India’s recent 3-0 series sweep, where his fluent 79 set the tone for a comprehensive chase.

The Bigger Picture

This Padma Shri cements Rohit’s legacy not just as a cricketer, but as a statesman of the sport — someone whose calm captaincy reshaped Indian cricket’s white-ball era. Off the field, he’s also stepping into new territory, with his entertainment debut already creating buzz.

Two ICC trophies. Multiple world records. And now, a Padma Shri. Rohit Sharma’s trophy room just got a little more prestigious — and honestly, it’s about time.
