Cabo Verde — an archipelago located 570 kilometres off the coast of West Africa — just pulled off one of the greatest shocks in modern football history. On Monday, in their highly anticipated World Cup debut in Atlanta, the Blue Sharks held European champions and tournament favorites Spain to a stunning 0-0 draw. Despite facing 27 shots and surviving the late introductions of Spanish superstars Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams, Cabo Verde’s defense turned in an absolute masterclass.

World Cup

With a home population of just 525,000 and a federation running on only seven staff members at the time of qualification, their presence—and now heroic success—at football’s biggest stage is one of the most remarkable stories of the entire tournament.

Here are 10 fun facts about the Blue Sharks that explain exactly how they got here.

1. Diaspora Drive

While Cabo Verde is home to 525,000 people, the diaspora is equally — if not more — significant. As many Cabo Verdeans live outside the archipelago as within it, and the World Cup squad reflects that reality.

Players in the 2026 squad were born not only on the islands themselves, but also in France, Ireland, Portugal, the Netherlands, and the United States. Cabo Verde’s path to frustrating the European champions has been built across multiple continents.

2. Rotterdam Recruits

Of all the cities that have contributed to Cabo Verde’s squad, Rotterdam stands out most dramatically. Six players were born in the Dutch port city:

Cabo Verde Players Born in Rotterdam
Sidny Lopes Cabral
Jamiro Monteiro
Deroy Duarte
Laros Duarte
Garry Rodrigues
Dailon Livramento

Rotterdam is home to between 20,000 and 30,000 Cabo Verdeans — a diaspora kickstarted by sailor recruitment in the 1950s and 1960s and expanded through subsequent chain migration. The city has effectively become one of Cabo Verde football’s most important talent pools.

3. LinkedIn DMs

Perhaps the most unusual recruitment story in World Cup history. Cabo Verde recruited Ireland-born central defender Roberto “Pico” Lopes — who made an incredible, goal-saving block late in the second half against Spain — through the professional networking site LinkedIn.

Former coach Rui Águas sent Lopes a message through the platform. At the time, Lopes did not speak Portuguese and assumed the message was spam, ignoring it entirely. Fortunately, Águas tried again the following year. This time, Lopes said yes, leading to his legendary defensive performance in Atlanta.

4. No Domestic-Based Players

With their reliance on diaspora players spread across the world, Cabo Verde does not have a single squad member playing club football in the local league. They are one of just four nations at the 2026 World Cup without any domestically-based players:

Curaçao
Ivory Coast
Senegal

5. Portuguese Past

Due to its colonial history, Cabo Verde maintains strong connections with Portugal, where the national team regularly trains and plays for logistical reasons.

Their final pre-World Cup friendly — a 3-0 win over Serbia — took place in the Portuguese capital of Lisbon. It was also their first victory since beating Eswatini in October 2025, giving them the vital confidence boost needed to hold off Spain’s lethal attack.

6. A Historic Cup Final Goal

The Portuguese connection is also relevant to seven Cabo Verde squad members who play their club football in Portugal’s top two tiers.

One of those is 38-year-old full-back Stopira, who came out of international retirement for this World Cup and recently wrote himself into Portuguese football history by scoring the winning goal for second-tier Torreense in the Portuguese Cup final.

7. An Ageing Squad

Cabo Verde arrive with one of the oldest squads at the entire tournament. The number of players aged 30 or over is in double figures, and the squad’s average age is 29.2.

Cabo Verde Goalkeeper Vozinha

At 38, Stopira is not even the oldest member of the squad. That distinction belongs to goalkeeper Vozinha, who is 40 years old. Vozinha proved that age is just a number by pulling off a string of sublime, world-class saves to keep a clean sheet against Spain. Meanwhile, captain, all-time record appearance-maker, and all-time record goalscorer Ryan Mendes is 36.

8. Seven FA Staff Members

The head coach is Pedro Leitão Brito — universally known as Bubista, the word in Cabo Verdean Creole for Boa Vista, the island where he was born. The former Cabo Verde international has been national team coach since 2020.

At the time of qualification in October 2025, Bubista was working with a total of just seven FA staff members — two of whom are based in Portugal and one of whom lives in Angola. Building a team capable of drawing 0-0 with European giants on those resources makes their achievement extraordinary.

9. Bakery and Petrol Station Tickets

Cabo Verde supporters travelling to the World Cup had to navigate official sales portals like any other international fan. Back home, however, things work very differently.

For their final qualifying win over Eswatini in the capital Praia, there was no online ticket sale. Instead, there were five official sales points: the stadium, three petrol stations, and a local bakery.

10. Pelé Pushback

After FIFA President Gianni Infantino proposed that every country should name a stadium after Brazil legend Pelé, Cabo Verde’s former prime minister Ulisses Correia e Silva announced that the national stadium in Praia would be renamed the Pelé Stadium.

Local opposition was immediate. Pelé had no connection to Cabo Verde, and the proposal was seen as an imposition without cultural justification. The plans were shelved following the public backlash.
