Meta Goes Full Football Mode: Every New Feature Across Threads, Instagram, Facebook & WhatsApp Explained

The world’s biggest football tournament is heading to North America this summer — and Meta is going all in to make sure billions of fans never miss a moment across its family of apps.

From live scores on Threads to AI jersey try-ons on Facebook, here’s everything Meta has rolled out for football fans.

Meta Goes Full Football Mode Overview: What’s New Where

Threads: Built for Match-Day Chaos

Threads is positioning itself as the ultimate second-screen experience for football fans. New features include Live Chats hosted by legends like Sergio Agüero and Ian Wright, real-time Live Scores appearing inline as you post, and a dedicated Football Community for match-day debate.

You can also add Team Flair — a flag badge next to your name — plus custom football emoji, stickers, and Game Reminders so you never miss a kickoff. Follow @threads for updated host schedules throughout the tournament.

Instagram: Search Gets Smarter

Instagram is launching an Enhanced Search experience: search the tournament name or tap on football videos and you’ll land on a dedicated hub of Reels, Stories, and official broadcaster content — all curated in real time.

There’s also a new AI-powered ‘Goal!’ voice effect in DMs, which unlocks a surprise animation when sent. Simple, but guaranteed to light up every group chat after a big goal.

Facebook: Go Full Football Mode

Facebook’s standout feature is Football Mode — double-tap the Facebook logo in your Feed to activate themed reactions and surprises. Long-press it to unlock a special football mini-game and custom app icon.

The new Wear It feature lets fans use AI to virtually try on their national team’s jersey and share it as a profile picture or Story. Open Stories → tap AI Edit → choose Wear It → pick your team. It’s a fun way to rep your country without needing to own the actual kit.

Messenger & WhatsApp: Your Group Chat, Upgraded

Messenger now supports Live Updates — real-time match highlights pushed directly into your group chat as goals, red cards, and key moments happen. Tap the plus icon in any group chat and select a match to activate it.

WhatsApp has partnered with Adidas to upgrade the football emoji to the official Trionda match ball for the duration of the tournament. New football Calling Effects, a sticker pack, and a dedicated Football Directory (with match countdowns and behind-the-scenes content from team channels) round out the update. WhatsApp Channels can now also post to Status for the first time.

Keeping Fans Safe Online

Meta is also stepping up its safety efforts — rolling out in-app reminders for people searching for tickets and updating anti-scam measures. Football draws billions of passionate fans, and Meta wants to ensure bad actors don’t exploit that enthusiasm through scams or abuse.
