Production Is Officially Underway
Production on the eagerly awaited final chapters of Netflix’s mind-bending sci-fi epic is officially in full swing, with stars Marlo Kelly and Jess Hong spotted filming highly dramatic sequences on Camber Sands beach in East Sussex, England.
This UK shoot is actually a notable exception for the series. While Season 1 was filmed almost entirely in the United Kingdom, Seasons 2 and 3 have moved their primary base of operations to Budapest, Hungary, where massive soundstages and sweeping locations accommodate the show’s enormous sci-fi scope — a common move for productions of this scale.

What Are They Filming? (Mild Spoilers Ahead)
The new set photos reveal a striking contrast between the characters. Jess Hong, who plays theoretical physicist Jin Cheng, is spotted in tattered, mud-stained, historically vague “peasant” clothing — suggesting she may be diving back into the San-Ti’s advanced virtual reality game. Meanwhile, Marlo Kelly, who plays human-alien liaison Tatiana Haas, is seen in a sleek, tactical all-black outfit — but with a heavily bloodied right arm and hand in several shots.
Nothing about this show is ever calm. And that’s exactly why we love it.

Eagle-eyed fans will spot a third major cast member on set: Sea Shimooka, who plays the San-Ti’s AI avatar Sophon, seen holding a green, gold-embossed book clearly titled “Fairy Tales” — almost certainly a reference to Yun Tianming’s fairy tales from the third novel Death’s End, a massive plot device containing coded messages about how humanity can survive the Dark Forest and the San-Ti threat.
The show is adapting the wildest concepts in Liu Cixin’s Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy — and it’s clearly holding nothing back.

What Else We Know
Season 2 will feature a reduced episode count compared to Season 1 — the creators have been clear they are filming exactly the number of episodes needed to reach the story’s natural conclusion. Additionally, four major new characters are being introduced as filming ramps up in Hungary, with more casting announcements expected soon. whats-on-netflix
The final two seasons promise to be the most epic chapters yet — and from these beach photos alone, it’s clear the production is pulling absolutely no punches.
