Netflix Is About to Demystify One of Art History’s Greatest Legends — The Jean-Michel Basquiat Documentary Is Coming

Jean-Michel Basquiat’s name carries a weight that few artists — living or dead — can claim. His artwork defined a generation, his story became a mythology, and now, Netflix is stepping in to separate the legend from the person. A brand-new feature documentary has just been acquired by the streaming giant, and the people behind it have made a bold promise: this time, it’s personal.

What Is Jean-Michel Basquiat Documentary About?

The film is described as a reclamation of what has been lost in the legacy of a globally renowned artist. Through untold memories from close friends and family, never-before-seen works, and rare archival imagery, the documentary aims to demystify the story of Basquiat and discover the man behind it all — Jean-Michel himself.

This is not just another retrospective. The documentary is made with the full backing of Basquiat’s family, with his sisters Jeanine Heriveaux and Lisane Basquiat expressing their pride at seeing their brother’s full humanity brought to light with care, intention, and respect. whats-on-netflix

Who Is Behind It?

The film is the directorial debut of Quinn Whitney Wilson, co-directed by Viridiana Lieberman — the acclaimed editor of Academy Award-nominated documentary The Perfect Neighbor (2025), which remains one of Netflix’s most successful documentaries to date. NFL star Travis Kelce is also among the executive producers.

Why Basquiat Still Matters

According to Wikipedia’s overview of Jean-Michel Basquiat, the Brooklyn-born, self-taught artist rose from street-level graffiti to global art icon before his death at just 27 in 1988. His seminal 1982 untitled skull painting sold at auction in 2017 for a staggering $110.5 million, making it one of the most expensive artworks ever sold by an American artist. His work continues to appear on everything from museum walls to streetwear — yet the co-directors themselves note that across the decades, “Basquiat” has become a moniker that doesn’t fully capture the entire person, and his origins have hardened into an ever-growing mythology. whats-on-netflixwhats-on-netflix
