Crunchyroll Drops First 12 Mini-Episodes of “Smoking Behind the Supermarket With You” Early

Summer 2026’s most quietly anticipated anime just became available weeks ahead of schedule. Crunchyroll has launched a special early premiere of Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You, with the first 12 mini-episodes now streaming — no waiting for July required.

What Is Smoking Behind the Supermarket With You?

Based on the beloved manga by Jinushi, the series follows Sasaki — an overworked salaryman grinding through corporate life, sustained by cigarettes and the warm smile of Yamada, the clerk at his favourite supermarket.

The official synopsis sets the tone perfectly: Sasaki is an overworked salaryman drifting through the corporate grind, sustained by cigarettes and the cheerful service and smile of Yamada, the clerk at his favorite supermarket. But one night after a grueling shift, he arrives late to find Yamada nowhere to be seen. With nowhere left to smoke, his spirits sink — until a pierced young woman calls out to him: “You can smoke here.”

It is a story about the small, unexpected connections that make exhausting days bearable. No isekai. No tournament arcs. Just two people, a quiet space behind a supermarket, and the kind of grounded adult romance that anime does not attempt nearly often enough.

The Early Premiere — What Is Available Right Now

Crunchyroll’s early premiere gives fans a head start on the series through a short-form format:

The 12 mini-episodes effectively deliver the first six full episodes of the TV broadcast version, split into shorter viewing chunks — a format well-suited for watching on a commute or during a lunch break. The full-length weekly simulcast begins in July, but for fans who cannot wait, the entire first act of the story is already available today.

Why This Series Has Built Quiet Anticipation

Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You has been on manga readers’ radars for a specific reason: it does not rely on dramatic plot mechanics. The tension is entirely relational — will these two people, who should not naturally cross paths, keep finding reasons to meet behind a supermarket at the end of a long day?

That premise — grounded adult relationships, understated humour, and cosy late-night conversations — is precisely what distinguishes it from the broader Summer 2026 anime calendar. In a season that will be dominated by action sequels and fantasy premieres, this series is the palette cleanser.

The manga built its following among readers who are tired of high-school romance settings and hyper-dramatic misunderstandings. Sasaki and Yamada are adults with jobs, fatigue, and genuine social awkwardness — not teenagers discovering feelings for the first time. That specificity of tone is what has translated into strong pre-season buzz across anime communities on X and Reddit.

Summer 2026 Crunchyroll Anime Calendar — Context

Crunchyroll’s Summer 2026 simulcast lineup is one of the strongest in recent memory. Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You represents the slice-of-life anchor of the season — the show you watch after the loud action premiere finishes, when you want something that does not require emotional armour.

For Indian anime fans on Crunchyroll — a platform that has grown its India subscriber base significantly over the past two years — the early premiere is available now at crunchyroll.com. A Crunchyroll subscription starts at approximately ₹109/month in India, and the series is available with English subtitles from day one.

For anime viewers also subscribed via the Jio OTT Pass, Crunchyroll is not currently part of the ₹200 bundle — making a standalone Crunchyroll subscription the only route to access the early premiere right now.

What to Expect From the Official July Premiere

When the full simulcast launches in July, episodes will drop weekly following the Japanese broadcast schedule. Given the manga’s pacing — slow, deliberate, and emotionally earned — the TV broadcast format suits the material better than a binge structure. Each weekly episode is likely to feel like an event for fans who have been following the manga.

Watch the first 12 mini-episodes now at Crunchyroll and follow the official series accounts on X (@Crunchyroll) for episode drop updates ahead of the July simulcast launch.

The Bottom Line

Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You is exactly the kind of anime that does not announce itself loudly and then quietly becomes the series everyone is recommending by August. The early mini-episode premiere is a gift to manga fans and a perfect entry point for viewers who have never heard of it. Twelve free episodes. Ten minutes each. A tired salaryman, a supermarket, and a stranger who says: “You can smoke here.”

That is all the pitch this series needs.
