Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 4 Is Back and Darker Than Ever — Twin Killers, True Crime Podcasts, and the BAU’s Rawest Season Yet

After a long wait, the BAU has returned — and Season 4 wastes absolutely no time reminding you why this show still has one of the most gripping ensemble casts on television. The two-episode premiere is emotional, terrifying, and occasionally even funny. Here’s your full breakdown

Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 4 — Overview

Where Things Stand: One Year After Voit

Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 4 opens after a long break, but the emotional damage inside the BAU never really stopped growing. A year has passed since Elias Voit was locked away, and the team is still carrying pieces of everything he destroyed last season.

JJ is still learning to do life without Will. Prentiss and Rossi chat about what could happen to the team. We find the BAU team and Voit one year after the events of Season 3 — and Season 4 slaps us in the face with emotional and damaging storylines.

The Behavioral Analysis Unit has never felt more human and more fragile — and that emotional undercurrent makes every case hit harder.

Episode 1: The Twin Killers With a Horrific Origin

The season’s first case is deeply disturbing. Luke and Tyler head into a new case after three people disappear on a dark road late at night. At first, the case feels simple — but everything becomes much darker as the premiere slowly reveals the kidnappings connect to a horrifying cold case from 1996, involving a survivor named Susan, who was assaulted, imprisoned, and left for dead decades earlier.

The man kept Jeff and Susan for a year because pregnancy was part of his twisted game. He impregnated Susan and raised the twin boys in captivity. Thirty years later, Susan has a husband and a college-age son — with no idea those twins survived. When JJ tells her the killers are two males and are her sons, the moment is devastating.

The twin boys were holding a second couple, torturing them in the same manner — their father in the hospital, FaceTiming to share the sadistic pleasure of their crimes. By the time the BAU tracks down the site, the twins had switched the men in each couple and demanded the new pairs fight to the death, psychologically tormenting them through flashing lights and ear-splitting music.

Episode 2: Voit, the Podcast, and Pure Chaos

Episode 2 shifts gears to something genuinely unexpected — dark comedy wrapped around true crime media culture. Voit is forced to confront his influence during a hilarious subplot where Prentiss’s old friend demands an interview with the notorious killer for his trending podcast, “The Sicarius Files.” During the explosive interview, Voit delivers the performance of a lifetime — making it abundantly clear that he was like any other sexual sadist chasing a high, and ridicules the audience for romanticising his crimes.

The shocking Season 4 premiere ends with a mysterious copycat killer turning off the audio in pure frustration — a chilling closing note that sets up what’s coming for the rest of the season.

His reaction to the podcast in the second episode delves deeper into the show’s wider exploration of how people evolve into serial killers, while also becoming an unexpected source of humour.

Verdict: The BAU Is Back Where It Belongs

After nearly two decades, the show still has the ability to surprise us — taking us back to its procedural roots with two exceptional cases while maintaining the emotional depth that Evolution brought to the franchise.
