Cole Palmer Shines: 4 Records Broken in Chelsea’s 4-2 Win

Cole Palmer scored four goals on September 28, 2024, leading Chelsea to a 4-2 victory against Brighton & Hove Albion at Stamford Bridge. The 22-year-old playmaker transformed a tense afternoon into a personal coronation, becoming the first player in Premier League history to net four goals before half-time.

While Georginio Rutter and Carlos Baleba threatened to spoil the party with early strikes, Palmer’s clinical efficiency shifted the momentum entirely before the interval.

The match stats highlight an extraordinary level of individual skill that left the Brighton backline completely dismantled. After Rutter opened the scoring in the 7th minute, Chelsea responded with a whirlwind of attacking intent.

Palmer equalized in the 21st minute, converted a penalty in the 28th, added a third in the 31st, and capped his spectacular first-half haul in the 41st minute. This performance saw him join the elite ranks as only the second Chelsea player, alongside Frank Lampard, to score four goals in two separate Premier League fixtures.

This victory serves as a definitive statement regarding Chelsea’s trajectory under Enzo Maresca, marking a fourth straight win across all competitions at the time of the fixture. By ending Brighton’s unbeaten start to the season, the Blues signaled their intent to remain firmly in the mix at the top of the table.

Despite the early defensive lapses, the squad’s ability to recover from a 1-0 deficit showcased a newfound resilience that had been missing in previous campaigns. Reports at the time suggested the result left the London side just two points off leaders Liverpool, fueling optimism for a sustained European push as the season progressed.

Looking ahead, the challenge for Maresca is to maintain this high-octane output without over-relying on a single star. While Palmer’s individual record-breaking form captures the headlines, the tactical structure that allows him to operate in pockets of space between the lines will be tested by more disciplined low-block defenses.

If the team can replicate this fluidity, they remain well-positioned to challenge the established hierarchy in the league standings as the campaign deepens.
