India’s diplomatic meetings have seen gifts of heritage art, handcrafted textiles, and cultural artefacts. But nothing — absolutely nothing — has gone viral quite like Prime Minister Narendra Modi handing Italian PM Giorgia Meloni a humble packet of Melody toffees in Rome. What Happened in Rome

Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented a special “Melody” gift to his Italian counterpart Giorgia Meloni during their meeting in Rome, adding another light-hearted moment to the friendly chemistry shared by the two leaders.

In the 12-second video, both leaders can be seen holding a packet of Melody toffee. Meloni is heard saying, “Prime Minister Modi brought as a gift, a very, very good toffee — Melody,” after which both leaders burst into laughter.

Meloni then posted the video on X with a simple, warm caption: “Thank you for the gift.” That’s all it took. Within hours, Indian social media had gone into full meme overdrive.

Why India Is Absolutely Obsessed Right Now?

The “Melodi” trend became a rage all over social media after Meloni shared the video — netizens sharing rib-tickling memes, with the hashtag #Melodi trending heavily across platforms.

The “Melodi” nickname — a playful blend of Modi and Meloni — was already a beloved internet joke from previous diplomatic meetings between the two leaders. Their natural, warm camaraderie has made them a fan-favourite duo on the global stage. But gifting a childhood candy that every Indian recognises instantly — at a state-level diplomatic meeting no less — is the kind of moment that transcends politics entirely.

For millions of Indians, Melody is pure nostalgia. It’s the ₹1 chocolate-caramel toffee that defined school tiffin breaks, local shop counters, and the phrase “Melody khao, khud jaan jao.” Seeing it placed in the hands of the Italian Prime Minister inside a formal diplomatic setting is genuinely, brilliantly absurd — and the internet loves it.

The Bigger Diplomatic Context

Modi arrived in Italy on Tuesday on the concluding leg of his five-nation tour from May 15-20. Before their formal talks aimed at boosting India-Italy ties, Meloni hosted PM Modi for dinner and accompanied him on a visit to the iconic Colosseum.

The interaction came as both leaders were working toward upgrading bilateral relations into a special strategic partnership — making this one of the more significant India-Italy diplomatic meetings in recent years.

Not everyone was laughing, though. Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi reacted sharply, saying: “An economic storm is raging over our heads, and our Prime Minister is busy handing out candies in Italy.” As with most things in Indian politics, the Melody moment has found its way into the political debate too.
